Friday, May 4, Birchtree staff attended the World Trade Center Atlanta World Trade Day. It was a terrific event. Kudos to Dr. Diane Alleva Cáceres Program Chair and Dr. Karen Loch, WTCA President and the WTCA team for putting together such a terrific presentation. I was pleased to have served on the WTCA board for 15 years with Ambassador Andrew Young who was honored with the John C. Portman Global Leadership Award.
Vince Maggio, Lilia Postalachi-Glover, and Rick Gimbert staffed our newly designed Birchtree Global booth. Although we were exhausted by the time it was over, we had a great time. We featured our white papers and journal articles and found one of our customers, ADP, was just a few feet away. We had brought a copy of our ADP global human capital program for senior global relationship managers, which was of great interest to our visitors. It was great to have a testimonial from one of the participants in the next booth!

We were thinking about what type of “give away” we might provide to our booth visitors that were different than the usual pens and papers. I think we hit a home run with our choice. I’m pleased to be a member of the Booth Museum of Western Art, Artists Guild. The Booth is the largest western art gallery in the United States in Cartersville, GA a few miles north of Atlanta. Our give away this year were note cards of my 2018 painting selected by the museum to hang on display in the Borderlands Gallery from May through September. The Explorers Club Board of Directors has unanimously appointed Birchtree Global CEO and President, Dr. Janet L. Walsh as an officer of the organization. Dr. Walsh will serve in the Club Secretary position. Founded in 1904, the Explorers Club is an international multidisciplinary professional society dedicated to the advancement of field research. The Explorers Club promotes the scientific exploration of land, sea, air, and space by supporting research and education in the physical, natural and biological sciences. The Club’s members have been responsible for an illustrious series of famous firsts: First to the North Pole, first to the South Pole, first to the summit of Mount Everest, first to the deepest point in the ocean, first to the surface of the moon.
The Club provides expedition resources including funding, online information, member-to-member consultation, and a global network of expertise, experience, technology, industry, and support. The Explorers Club actively encourages public interest in exploration and the sciences through its public lectures program, publications, travel program, and other events. The Club also maintains Research Collections, including a library and map room, to preserve the history of the Club and to assist those interested and engaged in exploration and scientific research.
Dr. Walsh identified, excavated, and recorded a mid-Archaic work camp on Pumpkinvine Creek in Georgia. She regularly participates in field research in archeology and paleontology. Global human resources (HR) is a complex field. The legal, financial, tax, and HR functional responsibilities change completely in each country. They also change in relationship between countries. For example, data protection requirements tell you how to manage employee data, they also tell you how to handle the transfer of that information between specific countries. These functions affect how companies hire, fire, manage, reward, evaluate, move, and transfer personnel. In some respects, the HR leader will assume much more corporate responsibility in a global HR role, than in a domestic HR role. For example, just by hiring a managerial employee in Germany, you may create a “permanent establishment” (PE)in that country, which will allow a foreign country to tax your business. Or not. You might hire a customer service employee and not create a PE.
Just like in your country, laws that regulate the way in which companies manage people change continuously. In 2018 for example, updates to taxes in China, complex labor law changes in France, and new business incentives for companies in Spain are developing.
