Birchtree Global Incubator Accelerator Program

By |2018-10-23T11:57:34-04:00September 11th, 2018|Categories: Uncategorized|

The Birchtree Global Incubator Accelerator Program (BGIAP) is a comprehensive program, custom designed to give business leaders the information, resources, and contacts needed to make informed global market entry decisions.  BGIAP is customized for participants and organized from a for-profit corporate perspective.   Distinguished Fortune 500 C-Suite leaders, noted legal, tax, and HR firm partners, in-country government economic advisors, provide personalized instruction, advice, and support.

The Atlanta BGIAP Cohort begins on October 19, 2018 in Atlanta, GA.  Consider BGIAP if:

  1. Quickly acquiring a global corporate perspective on market entry is important
  2. Customized, expert business and economic advice will improve your decision-making
  3. Your business is globalizing, and your employees don’t have much global experience
  4. Experienced global business leaders with in-country experience will help you reduce your market entry risks
  5. Your business depends on optimizing financial performance in a foreign location

The program curriculum includes interactive live discussions, self-paced webinars, country specific materials, research data, and 3 hours of private consultation with your choice of global legal, tax, human resources, or functional experts.  The Atlanta program includes a one-day, meeting with the cohort and business executives followed by three weeks of online meetings.  Market entry research proves, and experienced global leaders confirm the 20 core modules in the BGIAP program comprise the critical information needed for leaders to make informed decisions.  Thus, BGIAP participants avoid walking blindly into the global marketplace, only to have to buy their way out of bad decisions.

The program is challenging and fast paced.  In four weeks, participants acquire the resources needed to reduce risk and increase financial performance in a new global market.   Participants will leave the program with a market entry workbook for the country or countries into which they wish to expand.  Unlike an economic development program, graduate school program, or isolated webinar, BGIAP is taught by business executives with for-profit and in-country experience globalizing businesses.  They know global business is NOT a one-size fits solution.  Your business strategy is unique.  To be competitive, your market entry decisions must be built around maximizing your strategic and operational goals.

If you want to globalize your business, we’ll give you the road map to make the best financial and operational decisions.  To find out more, call:  01 (770) 361-8285 or email: information@birchtreeglobal.com for the brochure and program outline.

2019 Student Grants from the Explorers Club

By |2018-09-10T22:02:01-04:00September 10th, 2018|Categories: Uncategorized|

Announcing the 2019 Student Grants Cycle

As the Secretary to the Board of Directors for The Explorers Club, I’m pleased to announce the 2019 Student Grants.  The Explorers Club is proud of its history but also looks toward the future by recognizing the importance of new ideas and avenues of exploration. The Club is deeply committed to supporting the fieldwork of serious researchers and, as part of its public service commitment, offers exploration grants in the following categories.

High School Students and College Undergraduates

The goal of this grant category is to foster a new generation of explorers dedicated to the advancement of the scientific knowledge of our world. The average award is approximately $1,500.

Graduate Students

This category of grant supports exploration and field research for those who are just beginning their research careers. The average award is approximately $2,500.

Awards for both categories range from $500 to $5,000. We recommend keeping your budget realistic. Only a few grants may be awarded at the $5,000 level.

Both grant categories will require you to submit the following via our online application system:

·         One page description of your project with attention to scientific objectives

·         Description of qualifications of your project associates and the specific sites of your proposed research

·         One paragraph description of your career objectives and aspirations and how this project fits into that plan

·         Letter of recommendation from your supervisor

·         Copy of a current student ID

·         Budget outline

Your proposal should be readily understandable to a reviewer of a discipline other than your own. Avoid heavy use of discipline specific jargon unless clearly defined. Keep your titles simple. Here’s an example.

Clearly stated: “Grouping Dynamics of Woolly Monkeys in Lowland Ecuador”

Too much jargon: “Phylogeography and landscape genomics of the aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis)”

Generally The Explorers Club considers research proposals in a wide array of disciplines, including:

·         Climate Change, Geoscience, Paleoclimate (i.e. Early Earth, Tectonics, Volcanism, Paleontology, Glaciology, Geophysics, Astronomy)

·         Marine Science, Marine Biology, Marine Life, Fish, Coral, Ocean, Fresh Water, Rivers, Lakes, Estuaries

·         Anthropology/Archeology

·         Plants and Molds

·         Animals

·         Conservation Science

Deadline for applications is 5:00 PM EST, November 5, 2018.

To apply, go to – http://grants.explorers.org/

Important things to note:

·         All applications must be submitted through the online system. If you have trouble with registration, please email grants@explorers.org.

·         Awards for the 2019 Grant Cycle will be announced no sooner than March, 2019. Projects must commence after March 15, 2019. Any project beginning before this date will not be considered.

·         Unfortunately The Explorers Club will not be able to consider research proposals for work being conducted in China or by Chinese citizens. The Explorers Club is considered a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and we do not comply with the Chinese regulations regarding grant awards by NGOs at this time.

I Just Attended George Washington’s Inauguration in New York in 1789!

By |2018-07-24T17:32:49-04:00July 24th, 2018|Categories: Uncategorized|

Last Thursday I attended George Washington’s inaugural in New York City.  Really!  Thanks to Richard Humphrey, CEO and Chief Creative Officer and his magicians at THE RIDE.  Richard has put together a way to tell stories and communicate information using virtual reality.  The intersection between artificial intelligence and virtual reality is of interest to us and our global clients.  In the demonstration we morphed from 2018 to 1789 and watched as George strode through the crowd and walked past us into Federal Hall.  Afterwards we celebrated a special program on THE RIDE thanks to Dan Rogoski, Chief Operating Officer.  Check it out:  www.experiencetheride.com, also, George says, “Hello!

2018 International HR Management Conference Report

By |2018-07-13T17:50:49-04:00July 13th, 2018|Categories: Uncategorized|

There is a big difference between research based facts about global HR vs. anecdotal information in the popular press. For example, how many times have you heard there are significant generational differences between Boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y with respect to work values? However, a review of the literature and large research studies show tis is not the case. There is another factor that is highly predictive for work values between generations. Do you know what that is?

If you are planning your 2019 human capital strategy and tactics, you’ll want to know this information and other cutting-edge, global HR research from the 15th annual IHRM conference held in Madrid last month. The research presented on global human resources management was compelling, relevant, and actionable. This conference is important because it presents research and fact-based studies on global HR management, rather than “pay to speak” or “individual experiences”. Presenters had to qualify through blind, expert review prior to being accepted. This conference also highlighted the global differences in HR leadership and management among countries, illustrating why a successful HR strategy might not work in another country. I spoke on “HR Implications for Cuba Market Entry” and described why entering the market in Cuba offers a particular opportunity for HR managers to take a lead role in the business operation.

I will be presenting a summary of the conference research in a webinar Tuesday, July 24 from 12-1:00 PM EDT. I’ll discuss the major issues facing global HR leaders, the current research and suggested actionable items. The discussion is designed to help with your 2019 strategic IHRM planning. This webinar is HRCI/SHRM certified for 1 re-certification credit.

You can register for Critical Issues in Global HRM: IHRM Conference Review, Madrid 2018 on Jul 24, 2018 12:00 PM EDT at:

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

John Jay Homestead 4th of July

By |2018-07-06T02:25:46-04:00July 6th, 2018|Categories: Uncategorized|

One focus of the Bedford Armonk Rotary is to give back to the community by producing the annual 4th of July Fair.  This year the Fair was held at the historic, John Jay Homestead.  The Fair provides a fun and exciting way for children and adults to catch a glimpse of the colonial activities at the time of the Revolutionary War.  Thanks to David Loda and the 6th Connecticut Brigade for showing off their equestrian skills and authentic costumes.

Rotary Means Business…in Toronto!

By |2018-07-06T02:16:48-04:00July 6th, 2018|Categories: Uncategorized|

Rotary Means Business (RMB) is a Rotary sanctioned program designed to help connect Rotarian businesses. This year the RMB board members met at the 2018 International Rotary Convention in Toronto. Over 50,000 individuals participated in the convention where Justin Trudeau the Prime Minister of Canada was the featured speaker.

From a business perspective two things were quite interesting to me. First the huge number of participants in the program. As a global conference people came from all over the world with a diversity of interests around mutual interests and community service. Interest groups included wine tasting, stamp collecting, quilting, radios, and doctors. Service groups included community programs for clean water, energy, medical services, polio eradication, vaccination programs, shelter boxes, and emergency services. Second, in addition to the interest and service group, this conference had a very large number of vendors with products and services for sale ranging from jewelry, clothing, camping, business services, travel agencies, and much more.

The RMB service fellowship is designed to make it easier for the 1.2 million Rotarians to connect to businesses in the local community and around the world. Rotary originally started as a way for business people to connect to one another in a trusted network. Through the years that objective was replaced with service to the community. Current strategy supports both objectives, service to community and connecting businesses. Check out the website http://www.rotarymeansbusiness.org for additional information.

Global Workforce Risks

By |2018-05-13T22:25:10-04:00May 13th, 2018|Categories: Uncategorized|

The bravest people I know are not those who have climbed Mt. Everest.  Climbing Mt. Everest requires meticulous planning and preparation.  My colleagues at the Explorers Club who have climbed Mt. Everest accredit their success in getting to the top to their careful attention to all the details that go into making a great ascent.  Entrepreneurs often do not have a guide to help them plan for their globalization.  They bravely take their businesses outside of their home country and weather all sorts of risks and challenges.  To help those new to the global workforce risks and challenges, we’ve prepared a webinar that describes some of the key challenges facing businesses expanding overseas.  We hope it helps you plan for your ascent to the top of your industry.
